HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Groceries were laid across the street outside the Richmond Raceway in Henrico County on Friday as part of a demonstration by local and state law enforcement agencies that are cracking down on dangerous driving, with a focus on motorcycles. 2,127 crashes on Virginia roadways involved motorcyclists in 2023 and 80 have already lost their lives in the state so far this year. "The numbers are clear, something has to change," said Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Motorcycle Safety Program Manager Mitchal Hrdlicka. In response to the high number of crashes, police departments across Virginia are working to address dangerous motorcycle operating, particularly speeding. "Speed absolutely kills," Captain Pete Cimbal with the Chesterfield County Police Department said. "[A motorcycle is] a smaller vehicle. They often move at high speeds, have capability of making erratic movements, and drivers need to be aware constantly of the vehicles around them." Virginia State Police Sergeant Jessica Shehan recommended motorcyclists to always wear proper protective gear when riding and to be aware of their surroundings. "Make eye contact with the drivers around you and use lights to increase visibility," Shehan said. For more information on how to register for a safe driving course can be found on the Virginia DMV's website.
