CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County Police Department is warning its residents about a phone scam claiming to be a part of the Department of Homeland Security. On Friday, Sept. 20, Chesterfield police shared in a Facebook post that the department had recently received several calls about a new phone scam involving someone calling people and claiming to be an agent with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to police, the caller says they are holding mail or a package for the victim and proceeds to ask them for personal information so that they could "release" the mail or package. The Chesterfield County Police Department would like to remind residents that this is a scam and if you have received a call from a person claiming to be from a government agency, then hang up and call the agency directly. Police advise people not to call numbers provided by the initial person who called.
