HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Get a taste of Egyptian culture and cuisine at the 5th Annual Egyptian Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22 at St. Mary and St. Philopater Mercurius Coptic Orthodox Church in Henrico County. Guests can join the fun from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the church, located at 2101 Fordson Road. Festival highlights include a bazaar, music, dance, church tours and photos with pharaohs. Homemade Egyptian food will also be for sale, including favorites like chicken shawarma, grape leaves, and desserts. "Everything here is traditional," Abby Farag, a church servant, told 8News. "Starting with our food, it comes from recipes from our ancestors in Egypt. We have Egyptian coffee which is also a must try. We have squeezed asab, which is sugar cane juice, which is delicious." Farag says festival preparations are multi-generational. "I personally am part of the youth, and our community is growing every single year," she said. "Our prep for this festival takes months, and the food we prepare two weeks ahead. That's how you can see that we, our men and women, come in and show it out every single day, and they put their sweat into this. I just wanted to give a great thanks to them for showing and for being part of our community." Additional parking will be located at the GRTC Park and Ride, located at 8531 Fordson Road, and a free shuttle will bring guests from the parking lot to the festival and back.
