PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- The American Heart Association is teaming up with Towne Bank and Riverside Health to address the maternal health crisis in Hampton Roads. Thanks to a grant from Towne Bank, the American Heart Association gave 100 infant CPR kits to Riverside Health. The health care system will in turn make sure the kits get into the hands of moms and babies most at risk. "These kits are going to be literally life savers in the hands of those new parents," said American Heart Association Executive Director MeShall Simmons. The kits contain everything you need to learn CPR and choking relief in about 30 minutes. "It will help parents be more comfortable in responding to emergency situations," said Ticorea Williams, Riverside's nursing director of women & infant care service. For instance, a person who takes a typical CPR class may walk out feeling confident, but it could months or years before an emergency presents itself. Their confidence may vanish. And instead the person panics, unsure of their ability to perform CPR under pressure. "With these dolls the parents can actually take home and practice it will help them be able to respond faster in emergencies they'll feel more confident," Williams said. While the grant will make them available to some, the Heart Association hopes people will share the lessons with family, friends, their child's caregivers and community. "The bigger goal is to have one person in every household trained in hands-only CPR and to understand that lifesaving skill," Simmons said. The kits are available online at $45. Riverside will begin distributing the free kits within the next couple of weeks.
