NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- Calling all "trail-blazers"! Norfolk’s Parks and Recreation Department wants to hear from you — they’re drawing up their new trails master plan, and your input at their next open house will help with that. Trails, like the Elizabeth River Trail, see a lot of foot and wheel traffic. It's estimated that over 600,000 people use the ERT each year. Stretching just over 10 miles, it's become a jewel in Norfolk's crown, helping to bring redevelopment to certain areas of the city. So it's natural that the assistant director of Norfolk's Parks and Recreation feels strongly about their impact.“It's a place to get active and be outdoors, so trails provide this meaningful opportunity, meaningful spaces, safe spaces, and it helps connect and create this wonderful well-being for the community,” Norfolk Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Ed Matthews said. And the community will soon have a chance to weigh in on what more they'd like to see. A community open house will be held next Tuesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Lambert's Point Community Center, and another from 6-7:30 p.m. at Norview. What they're looking for is what people would like to see -- or see more of -- on area trails."What type of amenities they'd like to see, whether it be wayfinding, interpretive signing, fitness stations," Matthews said. Input will form the next Trails Master Plan, which is a guide to the next 15 years of improvements, additions and developments. What's included in the plan dictates the budget, which will need approval when the city begins its fiscal year in May. And Matthews said they've already got the ball rolling."We have some trail systems and we're looking to develop. Norfolk has some challenges in terms of the geographic spaces that we have compared to our neighbors, but there's plenty of opportunity as well.” More information can be found by clicking here.
