Photo provided by the Warren County JailVermont State Police said they have arrested the 22-year-old son of a Pawlet Selectboard member, who with his wife and her 13-year-old son was found fatally shot in their Pawlet home early Sunday morning.Brian Crossman Jr., 23, of Granville, New York, faces three counts of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths, state police said in a press release Friday afternoon.New York State Police took the younger Crossman into custody based on a Vermont arrest warrant, the Vermont agency said, although no timeline for the arrest was given.Crossman Jr. made an initial appearance Friday afternoon in Warren County Court in Lake George, New York, on a charge of being a fugitive from justice related to the murder charges filed against him in Vermont, according to police.He was held without bail in the Warren County Jail late Friday afternoon pending another hearing next week in New York court, police said, and arrangements for his extradition to Vermont remain pending.“The Vermont State Police investigation identified significant evidence that linked Crossman Jr. to the killings, including digital information, statements, injuries, and various interviews,” police said in the press release.The suspect’s father, 46-year-old Brian Crossman Sr.; his stepmother, 41-year-old Erica (Pawlusiak) Crossman; and his stepbrother, 13-year-old Colin Taft, were all found shot to death in the Route 133 farmhouse they shared.A 27-page affidavit filed by state police Det. Sgt. Tyson Kinney Friday detailed a gruesome scene at the family’s farmhouse, after police were alerted to the killings by the suspect.According to the affidavit, Crossman Jr. contacted police shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday to report he had discovered three family members dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the Pawlet home.The younger Crossman met up with police in the parking lot of the Wells Village School. He was driving his father’s truck, and his clothing was bloodstained, the affidavit said.The younger Crossman, who lives with his mother across the state border in Granville, had been staying with his father for the weekend, according to the affidavit. He told investigators that he went out for a walk hours earlier and returned to the home to find his family members had been killed.Brian Crossman Sr. and Erica Crossman were married in July, Kinney wrote.The affidavit detailed at least two shotguns that were allegedly used in the killings, which were stored in a “gun room” at the home. That room included a gun safe and several cabinets where guns and ammunition were stored, Kinney wrote.In interviews, other family members told investigators that the suspect had a long history of mental health issues. The suspect’s grandmother said her grandson had “a troubled relationship” with his father, which she attributed to those mental health issues, the affidavit said.She also reported that her grandson was “proficient with firearms,” Kinney wrote.Following evidence collection, the suspect was released later Sunday into the custody of New York State Police and was transported to a psychiatric hospital in Glens Falls, according to the affidavit.
