MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 15-year-old accused of making threats against a Memphis school that put the entire district on lockdown was in juvenile court Friday. The student, who is not being named because he is a juvenile, is charged with Threats of Mass Violence of School Property. Nashville teen in custody after Southwind High School threats The state recommended the child should be detained and mentioned the efforts that it took for state and local law enforcement to link this teen to the threats. The judge said for the safety of the community, she will detain the suspect. His mother and aunt were present in court but did not wish to speak. The teen lives in Nashville and was located there by law enforcement Thursday, a day after the threats. His defense said the family moved away from Memphis to Nashville to "get away from some things" that were happening in Shelby County. According to Sheriff Floyd Bonner, the teen made several threatening phone calls to Southwind High School on Wednesday morning and posted threats on social media to shoot up the school. Several schools on lockdown across Shelby County Bonner said that more than 50 deputies responded to Southwind. The largest school district in the state was then put on lockdown. According to attorneys in court, the teen was convicted in March of 2024 for aggravated robbery and evading arrest. He was released from probation Aug. 14. A psychiatric evaluation was ordered. The suspect's next court date is Oct. 1. Teens charged with threatening, bringing weapons to school While the Southwind High threat may have been the most high-profile of these cases, Memphis Police say they detained five teens concerning other threats of mass violence to local schools in the Memphis area. A 15-year-old male was arrested and charged in relation to threats made to Whitehaven High School. A 16-year-old male was arrested and charged in relation to threats made to Craigmont High School and Cordova High School. A 16-year-old Southwind High School student was detained and charged with bringing ammunition and fireworks to school. A 13-year-old Highland Oaks Middle School student was also detained and charged with bringing an airsoft pistol to school.
