It was a fitting final Friday of the summer season across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Friday with unseasonably warm to hot temperatures across the area. With plenty of sunshine and a dry ground, afternoon highs surged into the upper 80s and low 90s. Luckily humidity levels weren’t off the charts but it was still pretty toasty for late September. That may change a bit into the weekend as the heat hangs on with slightly more humid air around. The final day of summer will feel every bit of it Saturday as afternoon highs work back into the upper 80s and low 90s. A weak frontal boundary will slide in from the west and although it will be lacking much moisture with it, there may be enough lift to squeeze out an isolated shower or storm during the heating of the afternoon. Game day for Kentucky and Ohio at Kroger Field will be a hot one given the 12:45pm kickoff so if you are headed to the game (or doing any outdoor activity) you’ll definitely want to hydrate properly and definitely wear plenty of sunscreen. The fall season officially arrives at 8:43am Eastern time on Sunday morning but Mother Nature isn’t letting summer go without a fight as more hot weather is expected across the commonwealth. Highs should reach the upper 80s to around 90 degrees with a mix of clouds and sunshine. There is still the chance of a few scattered storms given that the humidity levels will be up a bit (per the muggy-cast) but most locations should be have some dry times. However those rain chances should ramp up into next week. A more significant frontal boundary will slowly slide eastward on Monday with an increased chance of much needed rain across the area. With a few more clouds around highs should back off a few degrees into the mid-80s to begin the week. Our best opportunity for more widespread showers and storms should be on Tuesday as the front presses through the area. Although the expected rainfall won’t be a “drought-buster”, we’ll take what we can get given the drought conditions that persist across Kentucky and much of the Ohio Valley. Some of the data is indicating the front may check up a bit in response to a potential tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico so there is some question how long the rain chances will stick around but the more the merrier. Any way you slice it up our afternoon highs should back down into the mid to upper 70s late next week so it will actually feel a little more like fall by then.
