RICHMOND, Ind. — A student in Richmond has been arrested for allegedly threatening to place an explosive device in the local high school, at least the second teen from the city arrested for school threats this year. Richmond school police were alerted late in the school day Thursday that another threat had been made toward the RHS building and its occupants. This time police said the claim involved the high school being targeted by an explosive device. "The time for this madness to stop is long overdue," Chief Rick Thalls said. "I want the concerned public to know that once this message was received, Richmond Schools’ administration acted swiftly and accurately, implementing safety protocols to ensure the well-being of the students and staff." Officers quickly worked to identify a suspect and eventually arrested a juvenile in connection with the threats. That suspect is not being identified due to their age. PAST: Richmond teen arrested for making threats against RHS on Snapchat "What was initially described as a prank quickly lost its humor once the individual was detained in a Juvenile Detention Facility for the consequences of their actions," RCSPD posted on social media. This is at least the second Richmond Schools student arrested this year for making school threats. Last Thursday, local police arrested a 14-year-old after the FBI reported the student was making threats against the high school on Snapchat. Chief Thalls took this most recent arrest as an opportunity to speak with parents about the growing issue of school threats in Indiana. "Parents, this is where I need to speak directly to you," Thalls said. "Now is the time to have a conversation with your children about how they are processing the events of the past two weeks. Help them understand that these so-called pranks are not jokes—they carry serious, real-world consequences. Please reinforce the message that our schools remain safe." The issue of students making school threats has been plaguing central Indiana since the start of the school year. RELATED: School year kicks off with wave of threats, reports of bullying State Police announced last Friday that troopers from the Indianapolis Post arrested two juveniles – ages 12 and 15 – for allegedly making school threats the week prior. Two weeks ago, Anderson police arrested a student who allegedly threatened to bring a gun to class. Indiana State Police also arrested a Perry Meridian student for making alleged threats. These issues have not only been prominent in central Indiana. Earlier this week, an 18-year-old student was arrested for making alleged threats to a Jackson County high school. Two 11-year-old students were arrested this week by Evansville police for allegedly making online threats against local middle schools. Last Thursday, a 7th-grade student in Jeffersonville was arrested for making threats against two local middle schools. The 12-year-old now faces felony charges. Throughout last week, at least seven juvenile students have been arrested in Terre Haute for making threats throughout the Vigo County School Corporation. In Gibson County, sheriff’s deputies say a juvenile was arrested last Thursday after allegedly making threatening statements. In northwest Indiana, the Jasper County Sheriff confirmed on social media charges have been filed against one student for threats made to a middle school. Portage police said that their department is investigating made to local schools and that they are “seeking charges.” Combining these arrests with those from central Indiana, the total number of Hoosier students arrested for threats this school year has reached at least 20.
