RANDLEMAN, N.C. (WGHP) — An old mill with deep ties to Randleman could potentially be transformed into a new development. The owner is looking to preserve the historic integrity of the old mill on High Point Street near Randolph Street in Randleman “It was … the original mill that built this city .. Dicks’ Mill and then Union Mill and then changed hands with different people down through the years and had kind of gone into some neglect,” said Wayne Parker, an Alumiworks owner. Sitting on 17 acres in Randleman, the historic old mill site sits alongside the deep river. It was last occupied in 2021. Its location and historic ties to the city are what drew Parker to purchase the site in Jan. 2024. For six months, crews have been working. They have been cleaning up the property, restoring it and getting rid of dilapidated structures deemed unsafe. There are four structures and an old water tower they hope to restore. The movement at the old mill site has caught the eye of many people who live in the community. “Everyone wants to know what we're thinking, including us right now,” Parker said. “There's a lot of examples around the state of old textile towns and properties that have been restored from Greensboro, through Alamance County, down in Charlotte, all around the state, that people have had great ideas of luxury living and dining and shopping and all kind of potential.” The City of Randleman’s Zoning and Planning Department has not yet received a site plan for the old mill. Parker would only provide a tease about what he has in mind. “We will initially utilize one of the buildings in the back for storage and things of that nature for the company here. That's where the funding for the property comes from, and then as the vision unfolds ... will see how we adjust to that, to turn that into something with a beautiful historical site along this riverfront,” Parker said. While Parker is still working to identify what could be done with the old mill, he expects to make an announcement in 2025.
