(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A current UFC champion and a newly contracted UFC fighter, both graduates of Harrison School District 2 (D2), will attend the rivalry football game between Harrison High School and Sierra High School as honorary captains on Friday, Sept. 20. Current Women's UFC Bantamweight Champion Raquel Pennington, a 2007 Harrison graduate, and newly contracted UFC fighter Elijah Smith, a 2020 Sierra graduate, will serve as honorary captains at the "D2 Battle For The Superintendent's Cup" football game between their former schools. Sierra HS graduate Elijah Smith signs UFC contract Smith began training as an MMA fighter with his father, a former UFC fighter, gym owner, and coach, during the COVID-19 pandemic, after originally focusing on football. He made his professional debut at 19. On Tuesday, Sept. 17, Smith fought in Las Vegas in front of UFC owner, Dana White. Smith defeated New Zealand’s Aaron Tau by unanimous decision, according to UFC.com, earning him the opportunity to sign a contract. Colorado Springs native brings home UFC hardware Pennington, the current Women's UFC Bantamweight Champion, has not lost a fight since 2020, beating her last six opponents in the UFC. She will represent Harrison as its honorary captain, and Smith will represent Sierra at the coin toss for the rivalry game. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Sierra's new football field. FOX21 will have coverage of the game during FOX21 Overtime on air at 10 p.m. and online throughout the night.
