(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The seasons are changing and so is the amount of daylight we get here in the Pikes Peak region. The first official day of fall is Sunday, Sept. 22--sometimes described as the fall/autumn equinox. The word 'equinox' actually means equal night in Latin. Thus, during the autumn equinox, the northern and southern hemispheres will receive roughly equal amounts of daylight (and nighttime darkness). This is because the sun is shining its most direct rays right over the equator, distributing it equally across the globe. As we head further into fall, both meteorologically and astronomically, Southern Colorado will start to notice a pretty sharp decline in expected temperatures. Generally, the area will now experience more 70s than 80s, and soon enough 60s will become more common. For the beginning of November, highs are usually stuck in the 50s. In addition, our sun is starting to set sooner. After the fall equinox on Sunday, our daylight hours will start to rapidly dwindle. The region is now largely in 6:00 p.m. sunset territory with our first 5:00 sunset expected to happen on Halloween this year.
