NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Day four of the hearing on the Titan submersible disaster brought four more witnesses before the Marine Board of Investigation on Friday. The board is holding the hearing in North Charleston as they search for answers regarding the deadly June 2023 voyage to the Titanic. OceanGate Mission Specialist Fred Hagen was the first witness to testify on Friday.  Hagen described a Mission Specialist as someone who paid to participate in the exploration but wasn’t necessarily qualified. He told the board he had taken part in two OceanGate dives that descended including one in July 2021. Hagen said the Titan’s titanium dome fell off during an attempted launch a few days before the dive. Because of the issue, Hagen said Mission Specialists weren’t supposed to partake in the dive, but he insisted on joining. When it came time for the dive, Hagen shared with the board that Titan wasn’t weighted properly so Titan slowly spiraled through the water for hours, causing them to go off course. The Starboard thruster failed during the dive and the trip to the Titanic wreckage site was aborted. Hagen also recalled another dive he was on where Titan was briefly stuck in the Titanic wreckage. The former Mission Specialist reiterated throughout his testimony the work was experimental. “Anyone that felt safe going to depths in the Titan was deluded or delusional. I mean, it was an experimental vessel, it was clear that it was dangerous, and anyone that wanted to go was either delusional if they thought it wasn’t dangerous or they were just embracing the sense of risk. I mean its kind of like jumping out of an airplane. I mean, you don’t do it because its safe, you do it because its an adrenaline rush,” Hagen said. Day four also featured testimony from Dave Dyer with the University of Washington Applied Physics Lab, Triton Submarines Co-founder and CEO Patrick Lahey, and former OceanGate contractor, Antonella Wilby.
