HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- Horry County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lee County that killed a man wanted for allegedly shooting a McBee police officer Thursday night during a traffic stop in Chesterfield County. Officers with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded to Lee County Friday morning as part of a multiagency search for Alston Modlin, 27, authorities said. SLED previously said the McBee officer was in the hospital but is expected to be OK. At about 10 a.m. on Friday, authorities found Modlin, and a shooting happened. Horry County police said Modlin was killed and that the Lee County Coroner's Office is investigating. Authorities have not said who shot him. "HCPD was immediately requested by SLED on behalf of and in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Lee County Sheriff's Office due to the involvement of the three agencies," the department said in a news release. The officer-involved shooting was the 33rd in South Carolina in 2024. SLED had issued a "Blue Alert" Friday morning during the search for Modlin and said he had been seen driving west in Florence at about 6 a.m. Nexstar-affiliate WJZY in Charlotte reported that the officer was shot near McBee High School and a convenience store near S. 11th Street. It did not happen on school property. This is a developing story. Count on News13 for updates.
