BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — We remain over the peak portion of hurricane season where we see the most activity on average and fittingly, the National Hurricane Center is watching three areas for potential tropical development over the next seven days. One disturbance, Invest 96L, is over the Central/Western Atlantic. The second, the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon, is just to the east. The third area to watch will be in the northwestern Caribbean and Southern Gulf into next week. As of now, there is no immediate tropical threat to Louisiana; however, it is important for residents all along the Gulf Coast to remain up to date with the forecasts as we continue to monitor the tropics into next week. Tropical weather: What is rapid intensification of a storm? Why does it keep happening? Northwest Caribbean There has been a growing trend in model guidance that an area of low pressure may form sometime over the mid-to-latter portion of next week over the Northwestern Caribbean or Southern Gulf; however, there is a large amount of uncertainty in how any potential system could evolve down the road. Currently, there is no disturbance present, so there is a 0% chance of development over the next two days. Over the next seven days, there is a medium chance (50%) of tropical development. A tropical depression could form by the mid-to-late portion of next week and slowly work its way in a general northward direction into the Southern Gulf. There is a wide range of possibilities at this time all the way from a system moving into the Eastern Gulf or over into the Western Gulf towards Mexico. It is essential not to get hung up over one particular model run you may see, as those will change and continue to struggle until an actual low develops in the area. The picture should become clearer as we progress though this weekend into next week. There is currently no cause for concern here in Louisiana, but it is important for those all along the Gulf Coast to remain vigilant and tuned in to the forecasts over the next week. It is also a good idea to have your hurricane kits stocked and ready to go as we continue through hurricane season. Remnants of Gordon Leftover showers and storms over former Tropical Storm Gordon are very disorganized and pulled away from the center. There is a low chance (10%) for some slight development as it moves off to the northeast over open waters and any significant development is not expected. Invest 96L Just to the west of Gordon's remnants is another area of low pressure, Invest 96L, with disorganized showers and storms. There may be a small window for some development as it slowly moves northwestward before being pulled to the northeast over open waters. There is a low chance (10%) of tropical development over the next seven days and significant development is not likely.
