BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It takes so much work to be a part of the Future Farmers of America program. Long arduous hours in the Kern County heat, raising animals all Summer long...some students wouldn't have it any other way. Future Farmer of America: Alissa Cisneros and Buddy the goat "Fred, his name is Fred. It was a funny name for him, so I gave him Fred," Highland High School FFA student Martin Horn said. Fred has spent all summer eating his heart's desires. All thanks to Martin, who dedicated his summer vacation to making sure Fred had everything he could possibly need and more. Martin's consistent hard work has a finish line at the Kern County Fair. "I'm excited for the fair because it's my first time being IN the fair," Martin added. The FFA program isn't just Summers once dedicated or county fairs. This could lead to something much bigger. Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage For Martin, his efforts have already started to pay off. "Currently, right now I'm starting to attend the WyoTech in Wyoming, and after I graduate I go there July first for Agricultural mechanics on diesels," said Martin. From feeding a future family with Fred, to now focusing on feeding the nation. Fred will be available for auction at the Kern County Fair. The FFA will prep the turkey for the winner of the auction, completely cleaning it and de-feathering it in time for Thanksgiving.
