AUSTIN (KXAN) -- West Campus now has a new tallest student apartment building, named Icon, which topped out at 30 stories on Sept. 4, according to contractors Hoar Construction. Austin apartment building, named Icon, topped out at 30 stories, the closest near the University of Texas at Austin. (KXAN Photo/Cora Neas) Hoar, along with New York-based MDL Development, began construction on the building in March 2023. Now, it stands at 300 feet. Project leaders said that surrounding density and traffic were obstacles to their progress. “Completing a student housing project of this scale and magnitude, in a tight, densely populated setting is no simple task,” said Hoar project manager Austin Schniers, in a press release. “During the construction of Icon, we have stayed on track to complete on schedule, thanks to our reliable trade partners and supportive neighbors around the project, while also maintaining a high level of cleanliness, critical to this type of jobsite.” The jobsite itself, located at 2200 San Antonio Street, is only 100 feet by 100 feet, and has limited access points, both of which require smart practices by the builders. These include "just-in-time delivery" of materials that can't be stored on site, and a hard hat-mounted camera to create a 3D map of the jobsite. Icon will open for students in Summer 2025. Hoar said that the building will have 216 units and can house 555 students. Amenities include a rooftop pool, fitness center, lounge rooms, a media room, student work spaces and underground parking. Previously, Hoar also built the 18-story Inspire on 22nd, also in West Campus.
