The NYPD on Friday released bodycam footage of a police shooting at a Brooklyn L subway station that left four injured by gunshots, including an officer hit by friendly fire. The Sunday shooting was sparked by a fare-beater walking through an open gate at the Sutter Ave. L station in Brownsville and later brandishing a knife at a pair of NYPD officers, according to police. The suspect, Darrell Mickles, who was critically injured, was indicted Friday on charges of assault on the officer who was injured by friendly fire in the shooting and held on $1.5m bond. NYPD officer Edmund Mays was injured in the shooting, as was Mickles. In addition to the officer and suspect, a 26-year-old passenger was grazed, and 49-year-old Gregory Delpeche, on his way to work at Woodhull Hospital, was in critical condition with brain damage after being struck in the left side of his head, said family. “They almost killed him,” Gelpeche’s cousin Greg Nougues, 57, said. “The police have to investigate why they were shooting at this guy? The guy who shot them shot his partner and shot another pedestrian, and my cousin wasn’t even in the same car. What type of shooting was this cop doing?” The NYPD has said the offciers repeatedly told Mickles to drop the knife an that he was only a few feet from the officers — well within what is considered the zone of safety – brandishing the weapon when they opened fire.
