Carson City School District Similar to Reading Week in March, each year, students and teachers also dedicate a week to celebrate Social Studies. The observance typically falls around Constitution Day (a national holiday celebrated on Sept. 17) and is designed to enrich student understanding of history, geography, economics and civics. Throughout the week, students from all grade levels participated in a variety of engaging activities including dress-up days, door decor gallery walks, guest speakers, cultural heritage presentations, geography games and more. The week also focused on teaching students social studies content while developing important skills related to becoming a positive citizen and community member. At Seeliger Elementary School, Karrina Ferris, current Miss Nevada, read to second graders and then presented a lesson on voting and civic duty to several fifth graders. At other schools, students learned about the government of the United States, important historical figures, cultures around the world, different periods in time and practiced their geography skills through mapping activities. Students also engaged with the school board sponsored American Citizenship Essay Contest.
