Jalin Hyatt’s lack of usage reportedly led the Giants’ second-year wide receiver to call out loud for a trade. The former Biletnikoff Award winner as the top receiver in Division I college football said during a late summer practice that if the Giants weren’t going to use him, they should trade him, according to an ESPN report. The report said Hyatt is “still in the [Giants’] plans,” but he has played only 22% of the team’s offensive snaps compared to Malik Nabers’ 95%, Darius Slayton’s 79% and Wan’Dale Robinson’s 65%. Head coach Brian Daboll, asked Friday about the Hyatt trade comment, responded: “[He] never told me that, so. Jalin is probably one of the closer guys I am with on this team. You should ask Jalin.” Hyatt’s demotion behind Slayton happened in practice in late August after the Giants had split first-team reps between the veteran and the youngster for the bulk of training camp. It made sense because Slayton is the more well-rounded receiver. See his block on Devin Singletary’s touchdown run last Sunday against Washington for one example. Still, Hyatt sprinkled in some explosive plays as a third-round rookie draft pick out of Tennessee last season, including a 100-yard receiving game in a win over the New England Patriots. And the Giants have lacked downfield explosive playmaking so far. So it’s reasonable to wonder if GM Joe Schoen and Daboll ever intend to let this SEC speedster loose. Hyatt left the stadium after the Giants’ Week 1 loss to Minnesota very quickly, and afterwards, Daboll was asked if he was satisfied with the opportunities Hyatt had gotten in the game. “He’s our third/fourth receiver,” Daboll said. “So you play with Nabers, and Wan’Dale (Robinson) is in the slot. And Slayton played the majority of the snaps ahead of Hyatt. We have certain plays and rolls for Jalin. And that could change week to week, but this week that’s what it was.” Hyatt then saw his snaps reduced from 16 in Week 1 to 12 in Week 2, although the Giants took a step forward as an offense with their plan against the Commanders. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
