A Gurnee man fled from police after he was clocked going more than 100 mph Thursday night, the sheriff’s office said. Lake County deputies said they clocked Austin Williams, 47, going 104 mph near the intersection of U.S. Route 41 and Wadsworth Road at around 10:15 p.m. An officer conducted a traffic stop, but said Williams suddenly drove off at a high rate of speed in a Ford pickup truck. Around 11:10 p.m., the truck was spotted parked in a Gurnee neighborhood near William’s residence. Police called for a tow truck and, as it was preparing to tow the vehicle, a juvenile approached on foot and said the truck was his and was not involved in the earlier incident. Eventually, the youth was placed in custody after he refused to leave, police said. Williams, police said, then approached and told offices to release the juvenile. He resisted arrest and was tasered before officers could place him under arrest, the sheriff’s office said. He faces several counts of traffic violations and resisting arrest, authorities said. School threats An out-of-state juvenile was responsible for social media threats made this month about a Lake County school, the Gurnee Police Department said. GPD said it received word of threats made about Woodland Middle School, when multiple sources contacted the police after seeing the threat on Snapchat. Police said they worked with school administrators and the school resource officer before determining that the threat was a hoax made by an irresponsible juvenile. “We want to assure the community that there is no ongoing threat and that the situation has been resolved. While this case resulted from reckless action, we take all threats seriously and will continue to prioritize the safety of our schools. Charges in this case are currently pending,” Gurnee police said in a social media post. School bus crash Three people were slightly injured Tuesday in a three-vehicle accident that involved a school bus. Lake County sheriff’s deputies were called at about 7:20 a.m. to the intersection of Fremont Center and Erhart roads near Mundelein. Police said the driver of a Kia sedan was eastbound on Erhart when they drove through a stop sign and hit a sedan that was headed north on Fremont Center. The Kia then struck a school bus that was stopped on westbound Erhart. There were no passengers on the bus, police said. The Kia driver and a passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the sedan driver was treated at the scene. The bus driver was not hurt. The Kia driver told police that the low position of the sun interfered with their vision, causing them to run the stop sign. Child safety As September comes to a close, local police are putting the emphasis on child motor vehicle safety. Through the end of the month, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Waukegan Police Department said they will place extra emphasis on ensuring children are in proper car safety restraints. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says motor vehicle accidents are a leading cause of child deaths. Almost 40% of children who were killed in accidents in 2022 were not properly restrained by a seat belt or a safety seat, NHTSA said. All children under 8 must be properly secured by a restraint system appropriate for their size and weight. The sheriff’s office said people with questions can contact Sergeant Ari Briskman at [email protected] for more information. Training in the Park The Gurnee police, fire and public works departments will continue their Training in the Park program, visiting three locations Monday through Wednesday. The program allows residents to see training demonstrations, including K9 demos, from the police. The Monday program is at Ravinia Park, Tuesday at Southridge Park and Wednesday at Hunt Club Park. The programs start at 6 p.m.
