Albuquerque September 20 Latinx Games Festival 2024 – This event at the National Hispanic Cultural Center begins at 6:00 p.m. September 20-21 The Show – Albuquerque's longest-running comedy show happens every Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12. September 21 Downtown Growers' Market – This happens every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at Robinson Park. September 21 4th Annual Ristra Making Class – The Taproom in Old Town is hosting this event that begins at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $40. September 21 Fiesta in the Park – There will be free face painting, free paletas, hands-on activities from Explora, and more at the Barelas Community Center starting at 10:00 a.m. September 21 Flower Arranging Workshop – Enjoy a flower arranging workshop at Big Jim Farms beginning at 11:00 a.m. September 22 Barbie at the Historic Lobo Theater – Enjoy brunch and a movie at the Lobo! September 24 Swing on the Plaza – This free event at the Plaza De Las Cruces begins with a free swing dance lesson at 7:00 p.m. and an open dance at 8:00 p.m. Albuquerque Notices 🔶 City looking for volunteers to help clean park, neighborhoods ahead of Balloon Fiesta – The City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management Department and Keep Albuquerque Beautiful, in partnership with Imagine ABQ, will host the Fiesta Fanatics Cleanup Event at Balloon Fiesta Park and throughout Albuquerque. 🔶 Officials present new updated designs for I-25 Gibson Interchange Reconstruction Project – The Gibson I-25 Interchange Project came about during the I-25 corridor studies back in 2014. During Tuesday's meeting, NMDOT presented updated project designs that include removing the loop ramp near Gibson Boulevard and adding new lanes. 🔶 Special Collections Public Library in Albuquerque listed on National Register of Historic Places – The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Special Collections Library of the Public Library was listed on the register as of Aug. 9, 2024. The Special Collections Library is located at 423 Central Ave. NE and is home to a wide variety of materials dedicated to Albuquerque's history and culture. Its collections include historical photographs, maps, genealogical records, and a vast array of rare books. 🔶 Albuquerque Community Safety gets new hub in downtown – The department opened a new office Tuesday at the Alvarado Transportation Center at First Street and Central Avenue, giving staff a new location to respond to mental health crises and nonviolent conflicts efficiently. 🔶 Albuquerque International Sunport offers community a 'taste' of what's to come – The Sunport is trying to take flavors to new heights for people passing through—unveiling more than 15 new concessionaires which are expected to be up and running in the airport beginning this fall. 🔶 Special meadow to attract pollinators coming to the Bosque in Albuquerque – The city's Parks and Recreation Department/Open Space Division (OSD), Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD), Institute for Applied Ecology, and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps are looking for volunteers to help plant the meadow on Saturday, Sept. 28 near Campbell Road NW and Candelaria Road NW. 🔶 Del Norte High School holding 60-year anniversary celebration on October 5 – Albuquerque Public Schools said Del Norte High School was established in 1964 on the same land the school sits on today near Montgomery and San Mateo. 🔶 UNM adding back-in parking spaces along Campus Blvd. – Crews are adding more than 100 angled spaces along Campus Blvd. right next to the dorms. Work got underway on Thursday. It's expected to continue through October 15. 🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It'll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6. New Mexico Notices 🔶 Pecos Adventure Day taking place on September 28 – The kid's fishing derby will take place at Monastery Lake from 7 a.m. to noon. The river cleanup will start at the Pecos American Legion and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon. 🔶 State awards $70 million in loans for Ruidoso fire recovery – The South Fork and Salt Fires burned thousands of acres and destroyed 1,400 structures in the mountain community back in June. Lawmakers met in a special session to set aside relief funds with $70 million in zero-interest loans to repair the infrastructure. 🔶 FEMA extends home repair, rebuilding workshops in Ruidoso – The fires and subsequent flooding burned thousands of acres and destroyed 1,400 structures in the community back in June. FEMA has teamed with Albertson’s Market at 721 Mechem Dr. in Ruidoso to provide free information and tips on how to make homes damaged by natural disasters stronger and safer. 🔶 What kinds of natural disasters happen in New Mexico? – New Mexico is well known for its many days of sunshine, but in a desert climate, severe weather can hit rapidly. If you live in or visit New Mexico here's a list of the types of severe weather to be prepared for. 🔶 Economists present New Mexico's long-term revenue forecast – The oil and gas industry brought in $15.2 billion last year. Experts say the rise of electric vehicles could cause oil and gas revenue to decrease over the next 15 years, leaving investment earnings to take over as the main contributor to the state's general fund by 2040. 🔶 New Mexico Fall Foliage Forecast 2024: When to see peak colors – This earlier onset could be a result of the hot summer we had in New Mexico. The state experienced the second hottest summer on record (with records going back to 1896). 2011 was the hottest summer on record in New Mexico, and that year leaves began changing around this same time. 🔶 Santa Fe National Forest planning prescribed burns on the Española Ranger District – It includes a 647-acre broadcast burn in North Aztec Springs. The four burns would total 898 acres. A community meeting is scheduled for September 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Forest Supervisor's Office (11 Forest Lane, Santa Fe). 🔶 Gov. Lujan Grisham responds to Texas placing razor wire facing New Mexico – The expansion came three days after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott posted on X that the state would triple its razor-wire border barriers to "deny illegal entry into our state and our country.” Earlier this year, the State of Texas extended its barrier at a spot where the river stops running parallel to Mexico and turns north into New Mexico. 🔶 State's Legislative Finance Committee discusses oil and gas regulation – The main point of concern was pollution. The New Mexico Environment Department identified over 300 oil plumes they call methane "super emitters." 🔶 The Nature Conservancy plans to plant 5,000 seedlings on Hermit's Peak Calf Canyon burn scar – The Nature Conservancy is inviting community members to help them plant 5,000 drought-resilient seedlings on the burn scar this weekend. The Hermit's Peak Calf Canyon Fire scorched more than 340,000 acres between April and June of 2022 in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and in San Miguel, Mora, and Taos counties.
