REDLANDS — There are a number of reasons for success in high school football. Time in the weight room, excellent conditioning and teamwork are some of those aspects. Redlands High School football coach Bob Stangel credits the success of the 2024 team to the chemistry between senior running back Teddy McGee and his offensive line. McGee gained 246 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns in Thursday’s 35-10 nonleague victory over Grand Terrace. “He (McGee) just keeps getting better and better,” Stangel said. “Our offensive line does a great job and our offensive line coach Kevin Haugh is the best offensive line coach in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.” Redlands has won three of their first four games and will face Riverside Poly next week. Grand Terrace has opened their season with four defeats, but Titans coach Ryan Taylor believes his team has improved each week and is well prepared for league play in two weeks. Redlands had their hands full with Grand Terrace for the first 28 minutes of the contest. Grand Terrace intercepted three Redlands passes during that span, and Exzavior Oliver raced past the Redlands defense for a 78-yard touchdown run. The Titans took a 10-7 lead, but Redlands buckled down and scored the final 28 points. McGee had 70 yards on 12 carries in the first half. He surpassed that total in the third quarter, running for a 47-yard touchdown two plays after Oliver’s run. He added a 42-yard run to set up his 9-yard touchdown with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter. “I guess it took me some time to warm up,” McGee said. “I felt faster in the second half.” McGee is looking forward to the game against Riverside Poly. Although the Bears are not necessarily a rival, McGee said last year’s game against Poly was a fun game. Redlands won that game by an 8-5 score. McGee gained 200 yards in a 2023 playoff game against San Marino. He believes that running sprint events in the spring helped him improve his speed. Redlands junior quarterback Anthony Friare completed two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Taylor said he was proud of his team’s effort, especially on defense. Taylor is in his first season as Grand Terrace head coach and believes the team will be successful once San Andreas League play commences. “Our goal is to win the league,” Taylor said. He and his team received a strong endorsement from Stangel. “Their best football is ahead of them,” Stangel said. “He (Taylor) is doing a great job.”
