PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence City Council has passed the cannabis zoning ordinance. The 12-2 vote now brings the opportunity for more pot shops to open in different parts of the city. The ordinance expands on the 2022 Rhode Island Act on Cannabis, which allows adults over 21 years old to possess up to one ounce of weed in public or up to 10 ounces at home, cultivate up to six plants at home, and purchase limited amounts of cannabis. The ordinance specifies that cannabis retailers can only occupy the area designated to them by the city. Any part of the property that is not used for cannabis cultivation or retail purposes must also be separated from the facility by a wall or similar structure. Stores are also not allowed to be located within 500 feet of any school and it changes municipal zoning codes. During the meeting, councilors mentioned that the ordinance requires public hearings to ensure the responsibility of the cannabis industry in Providence.
