WASHINGON (DC News Now) -- A man was charged with a federal hate crime after he assaulted a stranger walking in Foggy Bottom while wearing a yarmulke.
Walter James, 38, was charged with one count of causing bodily harm to an individual due to his actual or perceived religion, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C.
A federal grand jury returned the indictment Thursday which alleges that on July 10, James assaulted a man "without any provocation or warning." That man was wearing a yarmulke while walking through Foggy Bottom.

The attorney's office said James punched the man's face and head over and over again. He then yelled antisemitic slurs saying, “You are murdering innocent men, women, and children in Gaza," and “You guys kill people in Gaza," along with other slurs.
The victim, as a result, received "cuts and abrasions to his face and right elbow and cephalic swelling," the attorney's office said.
If convicted, James faces up to 10 years in prison. He was previously charged with assault with significant injury with a hate crimes enhancement.
