(WAVY) — Election season is heating up, and at the center of the debate are reproductive rights, with particular attention to in vitro fertilization. Two pieces of legislation under their respective political parties failed to pass.  In June, Sen. Tim Kaine, alongside his colleagues, introduced the Right to IVF Act, a bill designed to safeguard and expand access to in vitro fertilization services. On Tuesday, Senate Republicans blocked the measure. The Right to IVF Act includes provisions from four separate bills, aiming to ensure legal rights for people seeking IVF, for providers offering the service, and for insurers to cover both IVF and assisted reproductive technology services - the Access to Family Building Act.  Republican candidate Hung Cao voiced his support for the IVF Protection Act, a completely separate piece of legislation introduced in May by Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, both Republicans.  The Republican backed bill differs from the Democratic bill because the republican bill leaves health and safety standards on IVF to the states.  "The American people are tired of the political games in Washington," Cao said in a statement. "I support access to IVF, and some of my own children are the result of fertility treatments. I totally support requiring insurance companies to cover IVF, and I support the IVF Protection Act introduced by Senator Katie Britt to ensure that any state receiving federal Medicaid funding may not prohibit IVF services." Senate Democrats blocked Britt and Cruz's IVF Protection Act. Britt described the bill as the only one that "protects IVF access while safeguarding religious liberty." A debate between Kaine and Cao takes place Oct, 2. at Norfolk State University and will be hosted by Nexstar Media.
