COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — The juvenile who was detained and released by the Covington Police Department on Wednesday, Sept. 18 in connection with a school threat, has now been fully cleared of involvement. According to the CPD, the juvenile's home, electronic devices and personal items were all searched and no evidence was found to indicate any involvement in creating or posting the original threat. St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office investigating threats circulating school campuses The CPD's Criminal Investigation Division, with the help of Snapchat and the FBI, were able to determine that the original post was made by a person named "Alex" from southern California. The post was initially shared publicly before being screenshotted and circulated in the local "Covington High School" Snapchat group. This and other threats look to be part of a pattern that has been affecting jurisdictions throughout the country. The posts are not linked to Covington and there is no credible threat to Covington High School. In relation to Snapchat in particular, parents or students should screenshot the sender's Snapchat username rather than their Bitmoji or display name. The username makes it easier for law enforcement to trace the account and investigate more efficiently.
