File photo by Natalie Williams/VTDiggerMore than 30 years after Cheryl Peters was found shot to death in her Morrisville home, Vermont State Police say they have arrested her estranged husband on a charge of first-degree murder.Morristown and state police took 70-year-old Carroll Peters of Morrisville into custody on Thursday, police said in a press release Thursday night. “According to the findings of VSP’s 31-year investigation,” the release stated, “Carroll Peters fatally shot Cheryl Peters in the head at her Morrisville home. Her body was discovered in the house on Sept. 2, 1993.”A Vermont grand jury that convened in Lamoille County recently returned the indictment against Carroll Peters on the first-degree murder charge, the release stated. Cheryl Peters was 42 years old at the time of the killing.“This family has been waiting for 31 years, it’s time for justice,” Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard said Thursday night. Asked what has changed in the investigation that led to the charges being filed now, Gerhard replied, “It’s a grand jury, and the community found probable cause to arrest him.” Peters’ arraignment was expected to take place Friday.
