HONOLULU (KHON2) — Rescue: HI-Surf, the new action-packed lifeguard drama to capture the dangers of Oahu's beautiful yet deadly coastline in North Shore will premiere Sunday. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news "The goal was to become certified as a lifeguard and learn what it's like not just in the water, but also on the stand, on ATVs," stated Arielle Kebbel, the lead actress who plays 'Em.'"You name it. We trained it." According to the show's producer, Brian Keaulana, its team hired over 90% local talent for its cast. Broadway in Hawaii announces 2025 shows "This is not Baywatch. This is real about local families, about us as lifeguards, what we deal with on a daily basis, and the lives that we've changed, the lives that we saved," said Keaulana. The show is estimated to generate about $40-48 million per season, according to the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT). Previous shows filmed in the state like Hawaii Five-O and Lost had "an incredible impact over a sustained period of time," per DBEDT. This also includes feature films like the Jurassic Park franchise. "The production is spending that here in our community for all kinds of different services and needs, not just those that are aligned with just production," said Georja Skinner, DBEDT Creative Industries Hawaii Chief Officer. Productions like Rescue: HI-Surf creates what DBEDT calls an economic ecosystem. DBEDT said the show hired more than 1,200 small businesses for its production. "Inside the production of local hires, the next ring coming out of that is those small businesses," stated Skinner. "You might have a lighting company that is hired, but you also have lumber purchases. All kinds of other support in terms of catering." However, Hawaii's film industry has potential to boost the economy even more. "We really need more than one or two facilities in order to grow this industry," said Skinner. "The more trained people then the magic number starts to go from $40 million a year to hopefully a billion dollar industry."
