This Sunday marks 35 years since hurricane Hugo slammed into the east coast.
The category 4 hurricane made landfall at midnight near Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina on September 22nd, 1989. Hugo produced the highest storm surge ever recorded on the east coast which was 20 feet in Bulls Bay.
By 5 AM, Hugo was crossing over I-77 between Columbia and Charlotte… bringing an unbelievable 100 mile per hour wind gust to the Queen City.
The storm caused extensive tree damage and power outages. Roughly 85% of homes and businesses in Charlotte were without power after the storm. Some people were without power for six weeks.
