Dozens of vehicles were damaged Thursday by potholes caused by roadwork on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. The Chicago Department of Transportation announced last week it would begin a resurfacing project on DuSable Lake Shore Drive between LaSalle Drive and Hollywood Avenue that would prompt lane and street closures several days during the week. The project, which is expected to be completed in mid-October, caused major headaches for drivers who needed a tow.Miguel Fernandez, service manager at Wells Automotive Service, said they've towed about 20 cars and "are still counting. We have 20 tow trucks, and they're all in service. Most of them are out on Lake Shore Drive.""I've never had to tow cars back to back like this," he said. "We're getting calls every other minute. The problem is we can't get our tow trucks onto Lake Shore Drive, so the drivers need to get off the road and to the nearest exit, which can damage their cars more."Fernandez said most of the issues are blown tires and bent rims — which could cost between $300 and $1,200 to repair. Many of the flat tires were caused by a large pothole on the southbound lane near Fullerton Avenue, while others were damaged near Belmont Avenue.CDOT said crews responded Thursday morning to perform immediate repairs to the potholes and will expand the overnight closures to Belmont Avenue for more extensive pothole patching."As part of CDOT’s ongoing resurfacing of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive, crews have been milling the southbound lanes this week between Irving Park Road and LaSalle Drive," CDOT said in a statement. "Milling is the process in which the top layer of asphalt is removed in preparation for resurfacing with new asphalt. The roadway base was found to be in poorer condition than anticipated, resulting in potholes on the milled surface."Drivers can file a damage claim at the Chicago city clerk's office.
