SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- After rolling out digital driver's licenses and state IDs on Google Wallets last month for California residents, Gov. Gavin Newsom made a similar announcement Thursday, allowing people to securely add the same documents to their Apple Wallets. According to the governor's office, Californians will be able to use the digital driver's licenses and state IDs in person at select businesses and TSA checkpoints at San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. The California Department of Motor Vehicles, however, states on its website that people should continue carrying their physical cards because law enforcement, state government agencies and other businesses are not yet accepting the digital versions. A user uploading their card to Apple Wallet will be asked to take a selfie and scan the front and back of their driver's license or state ID card. While the option of carrying a driver's license or state ID in Apple Wallet does not replace the requirement to carry a physical card while driving, it does offer a more convenient option for California residents to provide identity verification, the governor's office stated in its release Thursday.
