SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The San Diego Police Department is investigating a shooting involving a U.S. Customs and Border officer at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry on Wednesday. According to police, a call came in at 10:18 a.m. notifying the department of the shooting. The Homicide Unit, who looks into incidents where law enforcement officers discharge their weapons, immediately responded to the scene to investigate. Based on preliminary information, police said a CBP officer had located a man walking on a road in a restricted area of the port of entry where a pedestrian should not be. At that point, the officer requested backup and contacted the suspect. Deadly shooting investigation underway in East County Things then escalated when the suspect pulled out and started waving a screwdriver while coming toward the CBP officer, police explained. The man reportedly ignored the officer's commands to stop and drop the screwdriver. As the suspect continued to advance forward with the screwdriver in hand, the officer discharged his firearm multiple times. Police said the suspect was struck in his arms and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A CBP pickup truck was also struck by gunfire. The suspect, only identified as a man in his 20s, was taken into custody by CBP officers. He is now in federal custody and could face charges for assault on a federal officer. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing by Homeland Security Investigations. The identity of the involved CBP officer is being withheld at this time. San Diego police only confirmed that he has been an officer for 22 years and is currently assigned as a supervisor. Once the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to determine if the officer bears any criminal liability for his actions.
