(KRON) – Overnight encampments will no longer be allowed on the Stanford University campus. University officials made the announcement as part of their new “Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom at Stanford” guidelines rolled out on Wednesday.  If unauthorized tents are seen past 10 p.m., they will be removed, Stanford officials said.  The university is also prohibiting “disruptions” on its campus, meaning demonstrations such as the ones some students performed in the spring graduation ceremony are now unauthorized. “Violators are subject to disciplinary action,” the university said.  Stanford officials say protests are still encouraged—just not in most places on campus. Instead, university officials are urging students to demonstrate in White Plaza, an event space often associated with demonstrations on the Stanford campus.  “White Plaza can be used for spontaneous protests and demonstrations by Stanford affiliates without advance permission,” the university said.  The university also emphasized part of its 1986 policy on campus disruptions, claiming that anybody a university official “believes to be violating the disruption policy” must identify themselves through formal ID and by “removing any face covering if necessary.”   More details on Stanford’s new guidelines can be found here.  In June, an award-winning student journalist for the Stanford Daily was arrested while covering a pro-Palestine protest outside the Stanford campus’ president’s office.  In August, both the University of California and Cal State University systems banned overnight tent encampments.
