SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is offering free domestic well water testing at events in the state this weekend. "Cabinet in Your Community" will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday in Mescalero at the State Services Expo at the Inn of the Mountain Gods along with a town hall from 5:340 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 21, the NMED and other state departments will be in Ruidoso beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Ruidoso High School Cafeteria with their town hall at 1:00 p.m. NM agencies address arsenic in drinking water Those interested should bring their water samples to NMED's booth at the events. Well water tests usually run about $150 but will be free to the first 100 participants or while supplies last. Test results will be mailed to the households following the event. To get a good water sample: Let the w after run for two to three minutes before collecting the sample. Fill a clean glass or plastic container without any odors with at least a quart or liter of your well water. If the home has a whole house filtration system, collect the water at the wellhead prior to any filtration or softener systems, if possible. Fill the container with water as close to the time of testing as possible. Water from public water systems is tested periodically and results are posted on the Drinking Water Watch website.
