HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A local business says it has been receiving opened mail for months, but this isn’t just junk mail. The opened envelopes are checks from their customers.  At American Door and Glass Inc. in Henrico County, the checks in the opened envelopes have ranged from $200 up to $500,000, according to the business. On Monday, Sept. 16, office administrator Tammylee Pastelnick said she received an envelope with a check from a customer for half a million dollars, but said she wasn’t the first person to open it.  "This has affected us as a business," Pastelnick said. The first time she said she became aware of the opened envelopes was July 26, but she thought maybe it was an accident. But when it happened a second time in the beginning of August, she said, "I knew then that there was an issue." Pastelnick said that it’s happened four more times since then.  Pastelnick went to the post office and spoke with a supervisor, who gave her a phone number to call and guidance to file a formal complaint. Now, she’s gone to the post office multiple times and to the mail postal service plant in Sandston. They told her to keep calling the United States Postal Service (USPS).  "I said, 'I’ve done that now two times,'" Pastelnick said.   So, she went to the Henrico County Police Division and filed a report, but police told 8News that since opening mail is a federal offense, this is a job for the USPS Inspection Service.  Pastelnick said the business immediately told its customers about it and asked them to keep an eye on their accounts. She said her biggest fear is someone is washing the money or selling the information on the checks.  "Not just the aggravation for us but also our customers and what we also do to try and protect them and help them," she said. Pastelnick said that so far, no customers have reported anything weird, but she’s concerned about how it could affect business in the future.  "I’m sure we’re not the only ones," she said. "I cannot believe that we’re the only business that this is happening to."  She said the business always picked up its mail from a P.O. box, but now it doesn't even let the mail carrier pick up the mail it's sending out. Pastelnick said the fewer people handling the mail, the better. USPS said they could not confirm or deny if there was an ongoing investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Henrico Police.
