PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The city of Pawtucket is again facing allegations regarding voting rights for Spanish speakers. Common Cause Rhode Island announced on Thursday that they sent a letter to the city registrar and Pawtucket's Board of Canvassers (BOC) warning about multiple Voting Rights Act violations they witnessed. "Despite being sued by the U.S. Department of Justice, the City of Pawtucket failed its voters during the recent primary election," Common Cause RI Executive Director John Marion said. "Pawtucket must immediately investigate the problems Common Cause Rhode Island uncovered and issue a report so that immediate steps are taken to be ready for the November general election." These observations were spotted by "trained, nonpartisan volunteers," Common Cause RI said. The BOC told 12 News it's been working closely with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to implement elements from their agreement signed in May. "This work has included hiring a bilingual elections coordinator, translating all information about voting in elections into Spanish, recruiting dozens of Spanish speaking poll workers for all Pawtucket polling locations, enhanced poll worker training with the Rhode Island Board of Elections, and setting up a hotline for Spanish speaking voters to obtain information and report any concerns," the BOC explained. As for this year's primary, the BOC said DOJ observers were in touch with the city that day and were present. "Based on feedback received by the [DOJ], the September primary was a success," the BOC said. "Whenever any issue was brought to the BOC's attention, they were promptly addressed." As for the concerns raised by Common Cause RI, the BOC said those "were addressed promptly." "For example, after being notified that Spanish language voting information had not been posted at 6 out of 28 Pawtucket polling places, the BOC quickly posted this voting information in Spanish," the BOC added. Common Cause RI's letter was also sent to the R.I. Board of Elections' chairwoman, Secretary of State Gregg Amore, and U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha.
