OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — EMSA has a new cutting-edge plan to train paramedics using simulation training, and they believe it will be a game changer. "We are one of the first EMS services to have something like this," said Rusty Friske, a SimTEP specialist. EMSA revealed it's simulation training for EMS professionals, or SimTEP for short. There, paramedics can train on hyper-realistic mannequins, a fully-stocked ambulance, and an immersion room. The immersive simulation room uses different 360-degree videos to give paramedics the feeling of saving lives right on the street, like 15th and Kelly. "There is the dog food factory. There's a skate park, too, behind those trees. And if you look further to the left, that's the Oklahoma City River," said Andrew Watson, a simulation operations specialist. Or they can simulate a pool to respond to a life-like drowning. "We want to incorporate pediatric learning and where kids swim," said Watson. Trainees then save child mannequins that are literally filled with water. Man knocks on, kicks in doors to save residents from apartment fire "We want to have that emotional response here in a in a controlled environment instead of the first time out there," said David Gooshaw with EMSA. From there, the practice patients are wheeled into a fully stocked ambulance, then a realistic hospital setting. "One of our most stressful scenarios is actually giving a report to the hospital," said Watson. The realistic mannequins are a huge step up from old models. Some have 3D printed parts from real cadavers. Some, can even provide vitals. "Before you had a hard plastic mannequin that you couldn't feel a pulse on," said Tori Thompson, with EMSA. "We can give the patients fluids and we can get return on the fluid." EMSA said immersing their staff in a world that feels real, gives them the best opportunity to translate learning into real-world life-saving. "This is as close to realistic as you can get it," said Thompson.
