FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The State Medical Examiner’s Office says an autopsy was performed on the unidentified body found in Laurel County on Wednesday, the body is believed to be that of Joseph Couch. Couch, the suspect accused of shooting several people on September 7th on I-75. Dr. William Ralston, the Chief Medical Examiner says they performed a soft tissue DNA test, but the results were inconclusive. He says the next stop is to conduct testing on DNA extracted from the bone. Testing will be done on Friday and could take between 24-48 hours, the medical examiner’s office says they will release those results once they become available. Dr. Ralston saying, “at this time, we are able to confirm that the autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a wound consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. .In addition, we are performing a toxicology test to verify if any drugs were present.” On Wednesday, Kentucky State Police have confirmed that a body found near I-75 in Laurel County is likely that of Joseph Couch, the suspect in a mass shooting that left five people injured on September 7th near Exit 49. Commissioner Phillip “PJ” Burnett of the Kentucky State Police stated, “there were articles associated with the body, so at this time we feel it’s Joseph Couch.
