FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- A new bookstore nestled along North Anthony Boulevard opened for business Thursday with the goal of shining a spotlight on female authors and their stories. Sunbound Books, located at 3215 N. Anthony Blvd., features an emphasis on books from female authors in a variety of genres, including mysteries, thrillers, romance novels and biographies. Liz Kelpin, owner of Sunbound Books, said she wanted to address the lack of places to buy new books from a locally-owned business in Fort Wayne, and she started looking into the idea of opening a bookstore last year. When entering Sunbound Books, a table filled with picks from the owner, Liz Kelpin, stands front and center near the entrance. "It kind of aligned with my work experience, and about a year ago I started looking seriously into doing it," Kelpin said. The bookstore also featured a section for children's books and offered a blend of contemporary works and older literature from notable female authors such as Agatha Christie and Jane Austen. "It just became important to me to highlight female authors or at least authors who weren't as well-known," Kelpin said. "What I kind of gravitate towards is reading stories about women or for women. It's what I'm familiar with ... it really was kind of just mashing up what we know with what we feel like is also something the community wants." After initially considering opening her bookstore at Electric Works, Kelpin eventually settled on the North Anthony Boulevard location since it is near where she lives and is close to two coffee shops and other local businesses. "They were remodeling this strip, and I love that this area is right on the trail and is really close to other cafes, the Wooden Nickel, The Garden does a lot of events, so I knew it was a good foot traffic [area]," Kelpin said. "I see it as a place that is not just for buying books, but for also meeting people and making friends and finding new things through books," Kelpin said. The bookstore will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.
