SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Kings Highway is a vital road in Shreveport, but upgrades are needed to improve safety, transportation, and economic issues. That’s why the Kings Highway Coalition, a group of community organizers, are hosting a series of public meetings where the community can gather to give input on infrastructure, economic, and quality-of-life improvements along the historic highway. Chris Lyon is a member of the organization, and he said that Kings Highway is one of Shreveport’s sorely under-recognized gems. “With even modest improvements to the roadway, traffic flows, and environmental and public amenities, this area would see a wave of interest and revitalization that could lift up all of the residents, business, and institutions in the area,” said Lyon. Why does a 2500-mile-long, ancient roadway connect Natchitoches, La., to Mexico City? Members of the coalition already include Centenary College of Louisiana, ReForm Shreveport, the Highland Neighborhood Association, Gladstone Area Partnership, The Highland Center, and people with diverse backgrounds. The group is hoping to attract the attention of residents, business owners, and students from the Kings Highway area. The first of three meetings will take place on Sat., Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. until noon at Centenary College’s Whited Room. The second meeting will be held on Sat., Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. until noon at First Presbyterian Church’s gymnasium on Jordan Street. These ancient, Native American trails connected in Northwest Louisiana The last of the three meetings will occur on Sat., Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. until noon at Centenary’s Whited Room. Discussion topics include improving roadways, pedestrian walkways, public transportation, local business growth, attracting investments, inviting spaces for the community, local activities, tree cover, groundwater retention, and more. Attendees at the meetings should produce ideas that will help begin an improvement plan. All are welcome to attend the meetings.
