BATON ROUGE, LA (BRProud) — After Hurricane Francine made landfall in Louisiana and an unnamed storm brought heavy rain to the Carolinas, the National Hurricane Center is now watching three areas for potential tropical development over the next seven days. One disturbance is over the Central/Western Atlantic. The second, the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon that could strengthen, is just to the east. The third area to watch will be in the northwestern Caribbean into next week. As of now, there is no immediate tropical threat to Louisiana; however, it is important for residents all along the Gulf Coast to remain up to date with the forecasts through the next week. Tropical weather: What is rapid intensification of a storm? Why does it keep happening? Northwest Caribbean There has been a growing trend in model guidance that an area of low pressure may form sometime next week over the Northwestern Caribbean or Southern Gulf; however, there is a large amount of uncertainty in how any potential system could evolve down the road. Currently, there is no disturbance present, so there is a 0% chance of development over the next two days. Over the next seven days, there is a medium chance (40%) of tropical development. A tropical depression could form by the middle part of next week and slowly work its way in a generally northward direction into the Southern Gulf. There is a wide range of possibilities from a system moving into the Eastern Gulf or over into the Western Gulf towards Mexico. It is essential not to get hung up over one particular model run you may see, as those will change. The picture should become clearer as we progress though this weekend. There is currently no cause for concern here in Louisiana, but it is important all along the Gulf Coast to remain vigilant and tuned in to the forecasts over the next week. Remnants of Gordon Leftover showers and storms over former Tropical Storm Gordon may have a chance for some redevelopment as it moves generally north-northeastwards over open waters. There is a low chance (30%) for development over the next two and seven days. Central/Western Atlantic Just to the west of Gordon's remnants is another area of low pressure with disorganized showers and storms. There may be a window for some development as it meanders over the next several days before it gets pulled to the northeast over open waters. There is a low chance (20%) of tropical development over the next seven days.
