BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana ranked fourth in the nation on the Education Freedom Report Card, which is produced annually by the Heritage Foundation. The Heritage Foundation created Project 2025, a right-wing transition plan developed for the event former President Donald Trump wins the White House again. Its education plans call for less federal funds to go to schools and a focus on school choice programs. The report card assesses states based on several education standards, ranking them on their support for education freedom, according to a news release. Categories include education choice, teacher freedom, academic transparency and the return on investment for education spending. Louisiana made the most significant jump in the country, going from No. 18 to No. 4. According to a Heritage Foundation news release, the state was No. 8 in education choice, No. 6 for return on investment, No. 7 for teacher freedom and No. 14 for transparency. "Proud to see Louisiana move from No. 18 to No. 4 in the nation on the Heritage Foundation educational freedom report card. Here's to a brighter future for Louisiana's classrooms!" said Gov. Jeff Landry in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Policies put in place by Louisiana's Republican-majority Legislature and Landry accounted for the score change. The report also the Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise (LA GATOR) Scholarship Program as an "expansion of already robust school choice options for the families. The program was signed into law by Landy. It allows the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to create an educational savings account (ESA) program.
