BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- If something seems out of place when you walk through the gates of the Kern County Fair and stroll 100 yards or so, that’s because an old standby is gone and a newcomer has taken its prominent place. You’d have to be a senior-senior citizen to remember the last time Mac’s Patio and Mary’s Ice Cream were not two of the first things to come into view at the entrance to the Kern County Fair. Those particular vendors started at the fair in 1952 -- quite a run. A financial issue ended their run this year. ‘Discover the Magic’ with new entertainment at the Kern County Fair In the place of those vendors -- owned and operated by the same family for decades -- is the Chicken Man, Ryan Needham of Wrightwood, who actually has three different booths at the fair. The main attractions at his main booth are hot chicken sandwiches, Philly cheesesteaks, hot pastrami and other fried goodies. Booth number two, inside a newly developed section of the fair, is Dole Whip -- which is like a fresh pineapple soft serve. Booth number three, next to the Cal Spas exhibit, is mini-doughnut sundaes.  Needham is like a dynasty -- he has 13 different vendor booths, including the three in Bakersfield -- at three county fairs simultaneously. Well, let’s see,” he said. “Low-calorie. Um. There’s … well, no. Well, nothing. Nothing is low-calorie.” Needham explained why -- given the fact the county fair is a family friendly event -- his main vendor booth features a performance wherein, according to a sign on the facade of the building, a chicken strips. “Chicken strips,” he explained. “We sell chicken strips.” Oh. A simple misunderstanding.
