COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) --- Few fans expected a memorable game on Sept. 11, 2004, but for the 104,000 people in Ohio Stadium that day, they got a classic. And it ended with a kick heard round The 'Shoe. Marshall coach offers Ohio State players a tasty NIL transfer deal Marshall made the short drive north to face the Buckeyes for the first time ever. The Thundering Herd had success in prior years playing against highly ranked opponents, including wins at Clemson, South Carolina and Kansas State. "We came to win," said former Marshall receiver Brad Bates, a Chillicothe native. "This could be your Super Bowl, right? This is this is your time to shine, you know, not just for the Thundering Herd, but for central Ohio… for what would be considered the small guy." It was a tight game throughout, with OSU leading Marshall 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Marshall picked off a Justin Zwick pass and was driving into Buckeye territory. They tied the game on a touchdown pass from quarterback Stan Hill to Bates. "Stan throws the ball, I catch it…. It's all or nothing," he said. "We put ourselves in a moment to be great." Ohio State-Marshall kickoff time announced Marshall later missed a short field goal that would have given the Herd the lead. After a short Marshall punt, OSU had the ball back with 20 seconds to play near midfield. They also happened to have America's best kicker on the sideline. Watch: Mike Nugent on how to make a field goal Mike Nugent won the Lou Groza award in 2004 as the nation's best placekicker. He still leads Ohio State all-time in scoring with 356 career points. That day, Mike would face a 55-yard field goal with two seconds to play to try to save the Bucks from an upset. "This might be that moment. Like, I've never had that, like a walk off game winner," Nugent said. "A 21-year-old kid… You have a lot more excitement than nerves, especially if you have a lot of confidence in yourself. I kind of took that out there on the field." The kick cleared the line of scrimmage and started dead center, but started to waver toward the left upright. Just as the ball approached the goalpost, it carried back to the right and snuck inside the left upright. The kick set off a wild celebration in the stadium, including teammates piling on Nugent at the middle of the field. As the celebration linger on, Bates did something both players have remembered for two decades. Bates broke through the OSU players to shake Nugent's hand and congratulate him. How warm will it be for football games this weekend? This week, Nugent and Bates reconnected at Ohio Stadium and re-lived the moment. "It's not very often do you see something like that in the game," Bates said. "From an opponent's standpoint, it's like, why not appreciate that moment and come up to you and give you your flowers, so to speak?" Nugent appreciated the gesture. "You coming over and making a moment like that… We were just kids. And to be able to have that kind of appreciation is just it goes a long way. It was such a long way," Nugent said.
