ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Seneca Park Zoo continues to earn accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The AZA is a nonprofit organization that works to advance zoos and aquariums with conservation, animal welfare, science, recreation, and education. The Seneca Park Zoo has been accredited every year since the late 1970s. This comes after the zoo had a difficult year with some of its animals. PJ the Masai Giraffe died last February from a seizure and a few months ago, they had to euthanize another giraffe, Kipenzi, after a battle with cancer. “The Seneca Park Zoo is truly one of the most prized attractions in all of Monroe County, and we’re fortunate to have such an incredible institution," said County Executive Adam Bello. "The AZA’s rigorous accreditation process recognizes that our Zoo has achieved the highest standards in animal care, educational programs, conservation initiatives, and overall guest experience." The AZA noted the zoo's relationships and collaboration, community and conservation initiatives, overall condition and repairs, and the Animals of the Savanna exhibit. "This incredible facility models our vision for a modern zoo, with engaging, inspiring, and educational exhibits that are linked to powerful programs conserving wildlife, near and far," said AZA president and CEO Dan Ashe.
