ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Fall colors are starting to show across New York State, but much of the Finger Lakes Region is holding out. That's according to the second weekly I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report of 2024. Volunteers reported the most severe foliage changes in the region in Cayuga County, where the leaves are turning yellow and red in the Auburn area. Steuben and Seneca Counties also reported 20 percent changes in leaf colors. In Monroe County, leaves are just beginning to hint at red and orange, as yellows and olives become more pronounced. Observers in Brighton reported seeing reds on the branches of some maple trees. In Wayne County, observers reported yellows and dark reds in the Lyons area. Drivers may also spot increased yellows and oranges along the State Route 104 corridor near Lake Ontario. Why do leaves change colors during the fall season? As for the rest of the state, parts of the Adirondacks are nearly at the midpoint of their autumnal changes, along with some sections of the Catskills. The Hudson Valley region is expected to see very little foliage fluctuation in the week ahead. I LOVE NY's fall foliage reports are based on field reports from more than 85 volunteers across the state.
