SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco is to receive more than $16 million in federal grants from the United States Department of Transportation, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday. The federal funding is intended to help modernize the Bay Area's ferry system and move the San Francisco Bay Ferry closer to running as a zero-emission fleet. As part of the funding, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Agency will get $11.5 million to build two new electric ferry vessels to support emission free ferry service between downtown San Francisco, Treasure Island and Mission Bay. Bay Area town named richest in California "The project will reduce congestion and provide fast, clean and reliable ferry service to emerging neighborhoods and developing employment centers," said Pelosi's office. An additional $4.9 million will be granted to the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District to buy a new low-emission ferry. "Thanks to the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, our nation's infrastructure is strong than ever," said Pelosi, "and San Francisco will continue to make progress in our mission to be a transit-first city."
