SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- The downtown strip of Alum Rock Village in East San Jose has a history of robberies and break-ins, similar to what we’ve been seeing in nearby neighborhoods like Evergreen. Officials hope that new security cameras will help bring crime down and allow businesses to stay open. The plan is being initiated by San Jose City Councilmember Peter Ortiz and the Alum Rock Village Business Association. The plan is to bring 35 free kits of four safety cameras each, allowing businesses in the area to feel safer while working. This is in response to the escalating public safety concerns as small businesses in Alum Rock Village and nearby areas continue to be targets of frequent break-ins and violent robberies. Suspects in violent San Jose machete attack arrested Last month, a business in East San Jose’s Evergreen neighborhood, not too far from Alum Rock, was targeted by criminals and broken into three times in three weeks. At that time, KRON4 spoke with the business owner who said keeping their doors open with crime like this isn’t ideal. “This is a very, very safe area, yet we’re ignored in the middle of the night when there is nothing open,” said Monica Levi, co-owner of The Funny Farm Restaurant. “I don’t appreciate just a lot of talk. I need action.” Officials said some robberies in Alum Rock are happening in the middle of the day and at gunpoint, leaving business owners fearful and hesitant to go to work.
