SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) - Barry Wright, who was found guilty on Tuesday of causing his ex-wife's car to explode, has died in custody.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reports that Wright died on Thursday while in custody at Liberty County Jail.
The Barry Wright legal saga dates back to July 2, 2019, when the Savannah Fire Department (SFD) responded to the intersection of Columbus Drive and Reynolds Street. According to a witness, 56-year-old Catherine Glyn-Jones, Wright's former wife, was stopped at a red light when her car burst into flames.
He was promptly arrested on July 4, and charged with Aggravated Battery.
Five years later, Wright was found guilty on three counts: use of a weapon of mass destruction, use of fire or explosive to commit any felony offense and possession of an unregistered destructive device.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Wright may have taken his own life.
This is a developing story and WSAV will provide updates as soon as they are available.
